Tips for working with local artists

Commissioning custom art is a very special human-to-human experience. Here are a few ways to make the process smooth and positive for everyone:

  • Plan ahead.
    Custom art takes time. Give your artist plenty of notice, especially if it’s for a gift or special occasion.

  • Communicate kindly.
    Creative work involves trust. Respectful communication makes the process better for both you and the artist.

  • Respect their pricing.
    Artists set their prices based on time, skill, materials, and experience. Just like any professional, their rates reflect real costs and value.

  • If a quote is above your budget, respond kindly.
    Instead of saying “Are you kidding? $300 for that?!”, try: “Thank you for the quote. That’s more than I’m able to spend right now, but I really admire your work.” This shows appreciation and keeps the door open for future projects.

  • Be upfront about your budget and timeline.
    If you have a maximum budget in mind, share it early — the artist may be able to suggest a smaller piece, a different medium, or a simpler design that fits.
